Camp for Blue Ribbon Movement

14-15 May, 2003

at Keshav Srushti, Uttangaon, Bhayandar (W)

Members of the Blue Ribbon Movement, a Bombay based youth group working on a variety of contemporary issues, gathered at Keshav Srushti, Uttangaon, Bhayandar (W) on the 14th of May for a two day camp organized by them and conducted by Phase Five. The participants were an enthusiastic bunch of 23 boys and girls, ranging from ages 15 to 23, and were present in almost equal numbers.

Participation was extremely good and some important lessons were learnt through ‘Games People Play' a session which explored how roles balance in group systems. They had great fun playing the different roles demanded of them in the game but also had a lot of questions for us on why this understanding was required in their lives and how they could implement it.

The afternoon game, involved physical activity which also helped to keep participants awake after a good lunch. Three teams each had to build a structure and use the opportunity to  observe how people work with each other/ interact/ negotiate, and whether they functioned with consensus and the kind of communication interaction pattern they maintained within the group. The group was very quick in understanding what they had to do and came up with a wide variety of alternatives in a very short amount of time.

The evening was reserved for having fun and this particular objective was fulfilled in great measure with activities like night time jam sessions, long walks, music and birthday (Abhishek's) celebrations and group games continuing through the night till about 5:30 am.

The second day began with the nature game, ‘Staying Alive', which was a riot of excitement once they picked up the game. The game brought out issues of competition, cooperation, rich- world poor- world conflict, non renewable resources, food security, laws of nature and environmental stability. There were a lot of questions about the game and its implications. Some seemed a bit shocked. Overall, the session seemed to provoke them into thinking about the immediate situation of their world and what they could do about it.

The camp closed  with personal sharing by the Phase Five team to answer questions about the joys and difficulties of applying these ideas to ourselves in our own lives.
